The Taxi Of Tomorrow Hits NYC

The Big Apple is known as the "city that never sleeps" and with all that hustle and bustle its residents and visitors need to get around. Luckily for all the city has a transportation system that could be argued is second to none: streets arranged in a grid, MTA buses, the subway, the ferries, the bridges, and of course, the big yellow taxi. The Crown Victoria is often brought to mind when the images of the modern day taxi are brought to mind - but as that vehicle was retired the city was left looking for a new official cab. After two years of pouring through bids and plans, they officially chose the 2014 Nissan NV200 in early May of last year.

With the new taxi comes a new name - aptly dubbed The Taxi of Tomorrow, and what more of a fitting place than the vehicle to makes it debut than the New York Auto Show earlier this month. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn were there to celebrate at a special event in SoHo.

Ghosn related to the audience all of the time and energy it took to build the newest New York City icon. Extensive research and input was provided to make the decision for the new vehicle - as drivers and passengers alike were asked what type of vehicle would be best for making trips uptown, downtown and all around town. Mayor Bloomberg reiterated, "The Nissan NV200 unveiled today will be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient taxi the City has ever had. New York City cabs have always been iconic, and now they will set a new standard. The 600,000 passengers who use taxis to get around every day deserve the cutting edge technology and top-of-the-line safety features that this model delivers."1

Some highlights of the 2014 NV200 Taxi:
-Anti-microbial seat cloth and Active Carbon Headliner to reduce germs and interior odors
-A roomy interior with sliding doors to make entering and exiting easy
-Charging Stations and interior reading lights
-Traction control and Vehicle Dynamic Control
-Sliding doors and warning lights to keep exiting passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers safe
-The NV200 is the only taxi to be crash-tested with full taxi partition and other cab gear in place

Want to see the taxi for yourself? Well you won't have to wait long, and this cab will be around for at least the next decade.
