Nissan Pathfinder Turns 27 - And Gets a New Classification

The 2013 model year marks the Nissan Pathfinder CUV's 27th birthday.

CUV?

That's right; for the 2013 model year, the Nissan Pathfinder will once again shift segments, going from midsize SUV to midsize CUV. The last time the flagship model underwent such a drastic change in size was back in '96.

A bygone era in which bigger was thought to be better, Nissan grew the vehicle from compact SUV to midsize SUV. Now, truck-like looks and driving are very much out of fashion…. Hence the gift of a more desirable, smaller size.

Access to a more popular segment isn't, however, the only thing Nissan is giving the Pathfinder for its upcoming birthday. With exception to a few signature design elements (such as the upside-down, trapezoidal shaped grill) the Japanese automaker has sculpted an entirely new physique - one that's far less burly than its predecessor.

If you were to put the new 2012 Nissan Pathfinder next to the forthcoming 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, you might not recognize the vehicles as being cut from the same proverbial cloth. The 2013 variant is many times more sleek and sophisticated. It's also a lot more fun to drive around in, thanks to an all-new, all-glass panoramic roof.

Happily the Nissan Pathfinder CUV's contemporary new look reflects an equally refined interior, which gains a laundry list of amenities,  that brings living-room comfort to four wheels.
